Washington DC’s hidden gem
After years of living in the DC area, we finally managed to visit DC’s hidden gem -the Dumbarton Oaks Garden. It’s a quiet sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city, just a few blocks from the busiest part of Georgetown. In 1920 Robert and Mildred Bliss purchased the Georgetown property that they named Dumbarton Oaks. Mildred Bliss began developing the garden in 1921 and spent many years creating a variety of garden “rooms” with the help of landscape designer Beatrix Farrand. The garden is absolutely breathtaking. The best time to visit the garden is in the spring, when the wisteria, azaleas, tulips, lilacs, and everything else is in bloom! The inspirational landscape makes you forget you’re in the middle of a busy city and transports you to a serene English countryside. Exploring the garden is such a treat -surprises at every turn. From rose garden, fountain terrace, pebble garden, urn terrace, Lilac circle, to much much more. I could wander through this garden everyday if I could.
Clearly we were there for the wisteria?
The garden is open Tuesday- Sunday, 2-6pm. Admission to the garden is $10 for adults, $5 for children (ages 2-12). There are military, student and senior discounts. Harvard students, faculty, and employees are free!
The address is: 1703 32nd Street NW, Washington, DC 20007. Two hour street parking is available.
