Tips for traveling with kids
I apologize for being MIA for the past couple of weeks. It’s been crazy busy over here. The end of the school year is our second busiest time of the year. It’s recitals, rehearsals, spring plays, end of school parties, sports, dinner parties, the list goes on and on. We are also getting ready for our long awaited trip to Maui, which is why I thought it would be a great idea to share my tips for traveling with kids.
No matter if this is your first time on a plane or the tenth, traveling with kids can be very daunting. Here are my tips to help you prepare and save you from going insane.
1. Entertainment
If you’re going on a long flight, bring as many things as possible to keep your kids entertained. This means books, crossword puzzles, ipads, portable gaming consoles, coloring books, etc. The more choices they have the better! This will ensure your kids are happy, quiet, and grounded in their seats. If you plan on using electronics make sure you bring headphones.
2. Comfort items
I absolutely love our kids’ neck pillows! We use them for car trips as well. Put the neck pillow around their neck and it will prevent their head from bobbing up and down when they fall asleep.
3. Snacks
There is nothing worse than having a hungry child on a long flight. I pack as many snacks as I can. On the day of the flight I prepare some fresh fruit snacks as well. Also, eating snacks during take off and landing will help them pop their ears (if your kids are too young or do not know how to do it on their own). My 5-year-old has trouble popping her ears, that is why I purchased this eustachian tube exerciser for our upcoming trip. We haven’t tried it yet, but we have it just in case. If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you probably already know that we do not travel light. I’m bringing the entire pharmacy with us to Hawaii?.
4. Disinfecting wipes
This is probably my most important airplane “must-have.” As soon as we get on the plane, I tell my kids not to touch anything until I wipe everything down. When I say everything, I mean EVERYTHING. Arm rests, window, seat belts, trays, anything my kids will touch -it gets wiped down (I probably look like a crazy, germaphobe lady to the people around me haha). I know germs are important to help kids build their immunity, but not when we’re traveling! I want to minimize our chances of getting sick when we are thousands of miles away from home and our trusted doctors. This is also true of the hotel room. Once we get in, I wipe everything down. Door knobs, remote control, phone, lamp switches, light switches, EVERYTHING! I love the travel size Clorox wipes, Wet Ones, and the Honest hand sanitizer.
Hope everyone has a great summer!
xoxo, Ania
